About Bombora Downs

Welcome to the 2014 Bombora Downs stud brochure - to those of us that love the idea of breeding the perfect racehorse this is both a time of anticipation and planning. For us at Bombora we are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the first Jungle Ruler foals, if they look like JR himself the expectation will only grow.

Lago Delight, our proven horse with just off 60% w/r is exceptional value and just goes on getting winners week in week out. More recently his first grand daughter to step out, Peggy Jean, won the Gr 1 Sires Produce and has earned over $900,000 thus far. Therock will likely have his first runners over the coming months. His rising 2yo's are an outstanding group and whilst they are not great in number they have been sought out by good stables and will be given every opportunity. Likewise the next 12 months for Annenkov. Whilst he has 2yo's trialling nicely they've yet to be tested and so it is with a great deal of anticipation we approach season 2014.

Which brings us to the planning! Choosing genuinely talented, tough, sound and well conformed stallions that compliment your mare is the first and most vital step on the road to anticipation and Bombora Downs is proud to offer four very affordable stallions that meet those requirements.

Stallions are but part of the mix at Bombora, foaling down for local breeders is one of our specialties, a service that sees us deliver in excess of 100 foals most years. The season is made further busy walking mares on to other stallions around Victoria. Three days a week we have a float on the road which is a service we provide to both resident and local mares. Weaning, sale preparation, spelling, agistment and breaking in are other services we offer to provide continuity of care for our permanent residents and many local breeders. From very modest beginnings Bombora Downs has steadily grown over the past 11 years into a beautiful farm with excellent facilities and a professional caring staff who are able to cater to all your equine needs.

Jungle Ruler

jungle ruler-01

Jungle Ruler started his racing career as a 2-year-old, with his best finish a 2nd in a 1200m maiden. He saluted the judge later that year as a 3-year-old and started a wonderful journey for his connections with multiple wins coming every calendar year for the next 6 years. He was a tough, durable racehorse, that retired sound when he was 9 years old after 115 starts, 20 wins and 24 placings, amassing more than $848,000 in prize money.

He was a versatile sprinter winning from 1000m to 1600m, on all types of ground but he was well known as a bold front runner, with grey mane and tail streaming, and a catch me if you can attitude. Jungle Ruler was twice stakes placed so could mix it with the best of them.

Jungle Ruler’s sire, Lion Hunter, a Group 2 placed sprinter, sired 17 stakes winners in the 6 seasons that he stood, with a Winners to Runners strike rate of 72%. Jungle Rulers dam, Calista, was the winner of her first 2 races and was by the influential speed sire, Zedative. There is plenty of speed to burn in this pedigree. A few of the progeny of Lion Hunter that have gone on to stakes success are Leone Chiara (dam of stallions Star Witness and Nostradamus), Lovely Jubly (dam of world class sprinter Chautauqua), Ferocity (stallion - standing in New Zealand) and Gold Edition.

Jungle Ruler has now stood a number of seasons at Bombora Downs. He has produced a number of winners from metropolitan grade to country as well as from sprints to 2000m. Fillies and colts alike, his progeny are being described as tough horses with a bit of attitude.

Jungle Ruler is best placed as a “breed to race” stallion, though there has been plenty of interest when progeny do go to the sales. He is producing good workman like sons and daughters that will bring a lot of fun to their connections when they hit the race track. Jungle Ruler was a legend of the turf and was the punters pal with his grey coat and familiar red blinkers. His progeny seem to be taking a lot from their dad.

  • Group 2 winner and dual Group 3 winner who was twice Group 1 placed including an amazing second in the Caulfield Cup
  • Internationally acclaimed 2400m performer
  • Won or placed in 18 Group / Stakes races from 37 attempts
  • Stunning, correct type with a brilliant turn of foot
  • Son of one of the world’s great sires in Dansili who is making his mark as a sire of sires

Stunning stallion DANDINO (GB) needs no introduction for Australian racegoers. He arrived in Australia with a highly impressive international record, having raced successfully in England, USA and Canada and with a Group 2 (Newmarket Jockey Club Stakes), a Group 3 (Kempton September Stakes) and a Listed win (Arlington Park American St. Leger Stakes) as well as a Group 1 second (Woodbine Canadian International Stakes) and a further eight Group and Listed placings before he landed on Australian soil.

He adapted beautifully to Australian conditions, running second in the Caulfield Cup (beaten 1.25 lengths by FAWKNER) at this first start here as a Spring Carnival visitor in 2013. After a suspensory ligament injury, Dandino came back to stay in September 2015. After a couple of meritorious runs in the Group 1 Underwood (beaten 2.85 lengths) and the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (beaten 0.95 length) and running second in the Group 3 Geelong Cup, Dandino went out on a high note by winning the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington in November.

In his career, Dandino has raced against some of the world's most successful middle distance performers and his globetrotting success is testament to his professionalism and toughness. A recurrence of his suspensory injury has forced the decision to retire him from racing. Dandino is offered as a superb breeding prospect.

A winner from 1800m to 2700m, Dandino is an outstanding type standing 16hh, has a wonderful temperament and possesses a desirable pedigree.

His sire DANSILI is a highly successful sire, having produced among others the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner RAIL LINK (now at stud). His son HARBINGER was officially the Highest Rated Horse in the World in 2010. He is the sire of 19 Group 1 winners of 33 individual Group 1 races. 26% of his stakes winners are at Group 1 level!

Dansili is now emerging as a force in the broodmare sire ranks, plus also as a sire of sires with many of his sons at stud in Great Britain, USA, Japan, Europe and New Zealand. Stakes winners from this emerging sire line dynasty are coming on a regular basis and with the quality of his first foals, there is every chance that this will continue with Dandino in Australia.

Dansili is a son of DANEHILL, who needs no introduction to breeders as a 'breed shaper' in this country and overseas.

Dandino is the best of his three-time winning dam's progeny so far, however his half sister has produced stakes placegetter and 2 year old winner in France, No Education, and 1200m winner at Ascot, Robero. This is the family of French Group 1 winner, LYPHARITA, a full sister to Dandino's granddam.
